Experience-centered online Japanese language program

The J. F. Oberlin University Online Summer Session aims to:

  • 1. Improve the learner’s Japanese proficiency
  • 2. Offer the most realistic possible experience of Japan
  • 3. Foster learner’ disciplined, self-study skills

This program is intended for those who have completed first year Japanese or the equivalent of JLPT N5 or higher.
Japanese instructors will assume students have the equivalent of the JF Japanese-Language Education Standard [equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages] A1 or higher.

Japanese in Action
Level: This program is intended for those who have completed first year Japanese or the equivalent of JLPT N5 or higher.
Japanese instructors will assume students have the equivalent of the JF Japanese-Language Education Standard [equivalent to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages] A1 or higher.

The levels of the JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education are the same as those used in the CEFR [Common European Framework of Reference for Languages].

Total hours: 2,800 minutes
Schedule: July 5th – July 29th

Total Credits: 4 Credits
Note: In your official transcript, the above 4 credits will appear as Japanese Communication A (Japanese in Action), 2 credits; Japanese Communication B (Experiential Activities in Japanese), 2 credits

Fees

Program Fee: JPY 130,000
-The JFOU Fellowship (JPY 35,000) is available to participants from JFOU partner schools, including IAUP, APUCEN and ACUCA.

Refund Policy
As a rule, we do not refund tuition and fees once payment has been completed. However, students who cancel due to unavoidable reasons before the start of the session will be refunded the program fee (minus the application fee of JPY20,000). Any other handling charges incurred are the applicant’s responsibility.

In this program, rather than teaching from textbooks, the instructor will prepare teaching materials according to the student’s level and needs. Incorporating JFOU students as class guests, we invite Japanese students and international students who are actually in Japan to participate and converse in Japanese. In addition, students will study vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and grammar. Incorporating Japanese and international students as class guests, students can practice conversing in Japanese with members of their peer group.

Experiences:

In addition to interacting with Japanese class guests, we plan to offer the following hands-on lessons:
Zazen (Zen Buddhism meditation technique), Koto (Japanese style zither instrument), Shamisen (Japanese style lute)

J. F. Oberlin University has an enrollment of approximately 10,000 students, including graduate students and students from overseas.
Every year we have about 700 international students enrolled at the university. We also have over 190 partner schools in more than twenty different countries and regions around the world. Our Japanese students acquire practical experience through a variety of programs, including not only language study and academic exchange programs but also volunteer and internship opportunities. The university has established five overseas offices to carry out various activities in international exchange and to support students studying abroad.
